BookTok Declares 'Slow Burn' Now Legally Requires 600 Pages Minimum
A coalition of readers has submitted formal complaints to publishers demanding that any romance resolved before page 400 be reclassified as 'a pamphlet.'
A grassroots coalition of BookTok readers has submitted a 47-page formal petition to the Association of American Publishers demanding that the term 'slow burn' be legally protected and redefined to require a minimum of 600 pages before any romantic resolution.
"We have been deceived," said coalition spokesperson Vivienne Park, 24, who described purchasing a novel marketed as a slow burn only to find the leads kissing on page 312. "Page 312. I was not emotionally prepared. I had not suffered enough."
The petition, which has gathered 84,000 signatures in three days, includes a proposed tiered classification system: 'Slow Burn' (600+ pages), 'Medium Burn' (400–599 pages), and 'Technically a Pamphlet' (anything resolved before the halfway point).
Publishers have responded with a joint statement describing the proposal as 'unprecedented' and 'not how publishing works,' which the coalition has interpreted as confirmation that they are winning.
At press time, three authors had voluntarily added 200 pages of additional pining to their manuscripts. Readers described the additions as 'still not enough.'
